How Do Points Transfers Work? Turning Card Points Into Flights and Hotels
Most of the best points redemptions you have ever heard of, the Business Class seats, the over-water villas, all share one move behind the scenes: a points transfer. Here is what that actually means and why it matters so much.
What a Transfer Partner Is
The major flexible points programs partner with a list of airlines and hotel groups. You can move your points out of the card program and into one of those partners, usually at a 1 to 1 rate. Once the points land with the partner, you book your flight or hotel directly through that partner using their points.
Why Bother Transferring At All
Because the same trip can cost very different amounts depending on which program you book it through. One airline might charge double what a partner airline charges for the exact same seat on the exact same plane. Transferring lets you route your points to whichever partner prices that trip the lowest. That is how the big values happen.
The Golden Rules of Transferring
Flights Are Not the Only Win
Transfers are not just for Business Class. The same approach books Economy flights at a great rate and turns points into hotel nights that would have been painfully expensive in cash. Best value is the goal, and that looks different on every trip.
This Is the Part That Trips People Up
