The Chase 5/24 Rule Explained (And Why It Should Shape Your Whole Card Strategy)
The Short Answer
Chase's unwritten 5/24 rule: if you have opened five or more personal credit cards (from ANY bank) in the last 24 months, Chase will almost always deny your application, no matter how good your credit is. Because Chase issues some of the most valuable starter cards in the points world, this one rule effectively decides the order of your entire card strategy: Chase first, everyone else after.
How It Actually Counts
- It counts card ACCOUNTS OPENED in the trailing 24 months, not applications or inquiries.
- Cards from every bank count toward your five, not just Chase cards.
- Being an authorized user on someone else's card can count too, which surprises a lot of people.
- Most small-business cards from major issuers do NOT add to your count, one of several reasons business cards are a bigger deal in this hobby than most people realize.
The 200,000-Point Mistake
The classic beginner error: getting excited, opening four or five easy cards from other banks in year one, and only then discovering that the most valuable flexible-points cards in the game are now locked away for up to two years. We have seen new members arrive with exactly this problem, and undoing it is just waiting. That mistake routinely costs 200,000+ points of missed bonuses.
It Is Not the Only Rule
Chase has 5/24. Amex has a once-per-lifetime bonus rule and its own family rules. Citi has timing windows. Capital One has approval quirks nobody fully agrees on. Every one of these interacts with the others, which is why a card strategy is a sequencing problem, not a shopping problem. Get the sequence right and every rule works FOR you.
What This Means Practically
If you are under 5/24 today, you are holding an asset: eligibility. Spend it deliberately on the highest-value cards before it runs out. If you are over it, the path still exists, it just starts differently. Either way, the worst move is applying for cards in whatever order the internet suggests this week.
